Property Justice Project Community Training
The Property Justice Project (PJP) is associated with the Homeless Rights Advocacy Project (HRAP) at Seattle University School of Law. The Property Justice Project is a new effort associated with the Homeless Rights Advocacy Project (HRAP) of Seattle University’ School of Law. PJP helps unhoused neighbors who have lost property from encampment sweeps conducted by the City of Seattle or its agents. HRAP offers this training to orient community partners to PJP’s work and how community members themselves can support unhoused neighbors when they lose property pursuant to a sweep in the City of Seattle. The training will cover:
- The impacts of encampment sweeps.
- The rights of unhoused people.
- How community partners can provide effective support.
- Note: The PJP applies only to sweeps conducted in Seattle.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course participants will:
- By the end of this training, community partners will:
- Understand unhoused people’s rights before, during, and after sweeps.
- Gain practical skills in documenting and safeguarding property.
- Learn the basics of filing administrative claims with the City of Seattle to help people recover compensation for property loss.
- Understand the importance of trauma-informed care with unhoused people.
- Recognize the limits of their role and how to avoid unauthorized practice of law.
This course is a community training on the Property Justice Project (PJP), which is associated with the Homeless Rights Advocacy Project (HRAP) at Seattle University School of Law.
Participation and course completion may be reviewed as part of the broader PJP training program. Completion records will therefore be maintained to help document participation in the training.
