What’s in Your Bag? Exercise
Purpose
This exercise demonstrates how difficult it can be to recall and describe personal belongings after they are suddenly removed—and why documenting property before a sweep can be important.
Step 1: Choose a “Bag”
Think of something you use regularly and know well, such as:
- A purse or backpack
- A work bag
- A car center console
- A desk drawer
Choose one, but do not look inside yet.
Step 2: Imagine the Scenario
Imagine that the City has conducted a sweep of your encampment and your belongings have been removed and placed into storage.
To reclaim your property, you now need to identify which belongings are yours.
Step 3: Make Your List
Without looking, list everything you believe is currently in your “bag.”
For each item, be as specific as possible. Consider:
- Brand
- Color and size
- Quantity
- Approximate cost
- Where you got it
- Identifying marks or damage
For example, instead of “pen,” write:
“Black Pilot G2 pen with blue ink and a cracked clip.”
Step 4: Check Your Bag
Now open your bag and compare its contents with your list.
Continue to the next topic, where you’ll be invited to Pause & Reflect, considering a few questions related to this exercise.
