3.4 Reflection Prompt

In your journal, take time to engage with the following reflection prompts.

  1. Freedom of Religion in the constitution highlights two polarities: protecting the government from the influence of religion and protecting religion from government influence. How do you observe these polarities in conflict or agreement in the world today?
  2. In modern times there are three distinct postures toward freedom of religion: a) a clear division, or wall, between the two, b) neutrality between religions and irreligious expression, c) inclusion of religion as part of our civic life, including government officials and offices, including religious practice, public acts, religious speech, to treat as part of our civic life. Go to your preferred news source and find stories of each one of these positions. Then reflect on them in your journal.
  3. In the first video, Professor Siegel states: “To make the constitution work American citizens must be committed both to the idea of constitutionalism itself and to a set of just and humane values that they imbue the constitution’s open commands with…” After engaging with this course, what new sense of commitment do you have to the Constitution and the values necessary to embody it in your community?
